Fans were overjoyed when Calvin Vlaanderen returned to racing at the previous Grand Prix in Italy, after fracturing his fibula at the beginning of April. Vlaanderen was only cleared to ride a couple of days before the event, unsurprisingly, so the goal was to build himself back up over the month of May. Those plans have been scuppered now though, as he revealed in the statement below.
"Super upset I won't be out in Portugal this weekend, I found out I got an infection in my foot a few days ago and have been on antibiotics but it appears to be worse than what we thought and will require surgery. I will let you guys know when I know more. Thanks to my team for the support."
It remains to be seen when he will be able to return to racing, but one would think it will not be for a while now. Vlaanderen currently runs seventh in the championship standings but, by missing the Grand Prix of Portugal, will undoubtedly slip to the edge of the top ten this weekend. More soon.
